Our first day was utterly delightful. As I tucked the children in tonight, Mouse said "Today has been just absolutely perfectly wonderful". And I agree. It has.
On our walk this morning, Kitten sat under the children's favourite climbing tree and wove herself a willow crown which she decorated with feathers and rosemary from our garden, and then we had a lovely little ceremony for her. She veiled herself and put on her crown, stood in the garden on her own and then I sang a simple little song to her, our "kindergartner, child of the sun", while she gazed at me in breathless, reverent wonder that just about broke my heart. Mouse and I beckoned her forward to join us, and Mouse presented her with her rose and said "Oh, welcome to school, little apple of my heart!" I just wish the children's daddy had been there to see them: so solemn and so sweet, with big eyes shining and smiles beaming.
And then our day flowed beautifully, effortlessly on. It was precious to hear the children remember the familiar songs and gestures from circle time. They both worked with enthusiasm at their main lessons [form drawing for her, fractions for him], enjoyed a snack of chocolate cake complete with mini-Mouse and mini-Kitten walking along a rainbow path of sprinkles, sang their hearts out in music, wolfed down their lunch, read beautifully to me and then we went off to play at the splash pad at the park.
I'm so glad we get to share this adventure together and so grateful for our happy start to a new year.
